Diane Flores and Tina Kelly: Venus Pole Fitness

Venus Pole Fitness

Diane Flores of Venus Pole Fitness in Modesto, California, where she teaches pole dance with her sister. Tina Kelly.

How did you get started pole dancing?

I started in 2007 with “A Pole Lot of Fun!” Of course, I became hooked and then went and trained extensively with Collette Kakuk of OC Pole Fitness, as well as Mikey Nunez of Antix Fitness.

How did you make the leap to opening your own studio? What was that like?

The parties were a huge hit and I had people asking for lessons. We went from teaching 1-2 classes in my house to a small studio in our nearby town, and then to our second studio, now in the bigger city of Modesto. It was very scary, not knowing how to run a business or if anyone would show up! I ran with the idea and never looked back.

What is the first thing you teach new pole dance students?

Besides our slow sensual warm-up, we start with “the stripper walk/laps,” then move into a short mini choreographed routine including one beginner-level spin.

How do you take care of yourself, given all the classes you teach?

Hmm…that’s a tough one. I enjoy bike rides to relax and unwind. Also a nice hot bath will do the trick. My latest indulgence is swapping pole lessons with my students for pampering services like facials, nails, toes, etc.

Favorite makeup tip:

Never, ever go to bed without washing off your makeup. And, love the eyelash curler!

Barefoot, sneakers, or platform heels?

Platform stilettos!!! ALL THE WAY!

Favorite grip enhancer:

DRY HANDS!!

Pole dance move that made you proudest to learn:

Inversion combo of: Invert from a climb to an extended butterfly to a gemini to a flat line…whoa so much fun!

Favorite treatment for bruises and sore muscles:

Rest and relaxation … a hot bath!

Who would you most like to have in the audience when you pole dance?

My hubby!

Who is your hero or role model?

In the pole dance world, it’s hands down Collette Kakuk of OC Pole Fitness. She has an amazing grace, beauty, and strength about her. Most importantly, she is a downright caring and giving human being. In my family world, it’s my dad. He’s overcome obstacles in the US that amaze me every day. His family always comes first and he will give you the shirt off his back.

What are your favorite words of encouragement?

You won’t know until you try.

Favorite pizza toppings:

Mushrooms and pepperoni.

Cupcakes or ice cream?

Cupcakes.

Anything else you’d like to share:

The pole dance community is so wonderful. I’m so proud to bring this athletic, graceful art form into the lives of so many women. The testimonials are amazing!

How ironic! I started off with A Pole Lot Of Fun which turned into “Want More Fun”, but quit the company to do Brown Bag :-)
