Pole Dance Starter Kit

Pole dancing is a joy and a challenge and even a whole way of life. If you’re just getting into it, there are a few things you’ll need, a few things you’ll want, and a bunch of things to find out. Here’s my way of pointing you in the right direction. Have fun and happy poling!

Need to find a good pole dancing instructor?

If you’ve never poled before, it can be hard to know what to look for in a teacher. That’s why I put together a few guidelines to help you find a good pole dance instructor. Once you know what you’re looking for, you’ll be in a good position to choose the right teacher or studio for you.

Want to take pole dancing classes at a studio in your town?

Learning pole with a bunch of other students who love it as much as you do is an experience not to be missed. If there are pole studios near you, definitely check them out. You’re looking for an instructor who emphasizes safety and body mechanics, and is really good on the pole.

Want to learn pole dancing online?

Not every town has a pole studio. Luckily, there are a lot of good online pole dancing classes to help you learn safely. You can injure yourself pole dancing if you’re not careful, so you want to learn from someone who knows their stuff – especially if you are learning in a virtual environment. These instructors will help you learn to pole safely.

Want to buy a pole?

At some point, you’re going to want to get a pole of your own. The question is, which one do you get? I’ve put together some pole reviews to help you know which brands are the best – and which are the worst.

Need something to wear to class?

When you’re ready for real pole dancing clothing, you’ll find PoleSkivvies makes the very best pole dance shorts and tanks you could ever hope to find. Yes, it’s my company, so I’m tooting my own horn, but PoleSkivvies is the only workout clothing made by pole dancers, especially for pole dancers, and my shorts take into account all seven things to look for in a pole dance short.

Want to kick it up a notch?

There comes a point when you need to make the leap from simply putting a series of moves together, to really starting to pole dance – and you may find you want a little more help than you can get from reading an article. When that happens, check out my private coaching sessions. These fun, tailor-made sessions teach you everything you need to start dazzling your audience!

Need a little encouragement?

These interviews with pole dance instructors and pole dancers show the heart and soul of pole dancing. Their stories and encouragement will increase your confidence and help you become the best pole dancer you can be. You can also read these confidence boosts for a little extra inspiration.

Need some pointers?

Good pole dancing is a beautiful artistic expression that moves and flows with the music. Putting the Dance Back in Pole Dance is a series that helps pole dancers learn basic dance skills. The posts will show you how to create pole dance routines and move with increased grace and presence.

Need some good pole dance DVDs?

There are a lot of pole DVDs on the market and I don’t pretend to have seen them all. However, I can recommend without hesitation Jamilla Deville’s Art of Pole series. Jamilla is an outstanding pole dancer who breaks down moves simply and easily, and also includes in her DVDs excellent strengthening and conditioning exercises.

And, for the sexier side of pole – also with a ton of fabulous pole dancing moves – get Shawn Frances Lee’s DVD series, which begins with “Slink, Slide, and Melt.”

Need pole dancing buddies?

The pole dance community is one of the best parts of pole dancing. You can meet pole buddies from all over the world and chat with them on the forums, or jam with them on Skype. Here are some great places for meeting your fellow pole dancing buddies:

You can also meet a lot of pole dancers (including me) on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Skype, and Myspace.
