Top Ten Tips for a Killer Pole Performance
1. Choose music you like.
This sounds obvious, but it isn’t. You need music that makes you want to move. If the music bores you, you’ll be fighting against it the whole time.
2. Listen to your music a lot.
Seriously, a lot. More than that, even. Listen to it while driving, while cleaning, while jogging, while napping. You want every nuance of the song to become part of you.
3. Don’t cram every move you know into one routine.
Your average song is only about three minutes. There is no way to get every move you know into every song and still make it look like you are dancing.
4. Don’t worry about what the other dancers are doing.
Concentrate on what you are doing.
5. Dance, don’t think.
Looking like you’re trying to remember your steps is never the way to go.
6. Forget that move you’ve almost – but not quite – got.
A performance is not the time to trot out a move you’re not sure of. Stick with the moves you’ve got down.
7. Make eye contact.
Let your audience know you’re dancing just for them.
8. Stop doing moves.
Take time to just dance – play with your hair, linger at the end of a move, take a moment to smirk before coming out of a spin.
9. Do a dress rehearsal.
Whatever you’re wearing, make time to do a run-through in it before your performance. You don’t want to find out in the middle of your dance that those snazzy ostrich feathers are going to get in the way of your grip!
10. Enjoy yourself!
The only thing guaranteed to ruin your dance is to look like you’re not having any fun. If you have fun, so will your audience!
