Top 10 Pole Dancing Firsts

Every new stage in pole dancing has its own best moments. These are my favorites – including some I can only dream about!

1. First pole dance class.

Is there a single one of us who doesn’t remember her first class? The excitement. The nervousness. The thrill. Did you go with friends or brave it by yourself? Did you take a class after you’d already started teaching yourself or was it the first time you’d ever touched a pole?

2. Getting your first pole.

Your first pole opens up a whole new world – more time to practice, more time to play around. All pole dance, all the time – heaven!

3. Getting your second pole (or third, or …).

I remember when I thought that I’d never need another pole. After all, I had one and it worked fine. But then I learned about different finishes. And the effect of humidity. And portability. It wasn’t long before I was shopping for another one …

4. Getting a pole mat.

Nothing says you’re serious about pole dance like getting your own pole mat. It means your skills are advancing and you’re taking your safety seriously. Very cool.

5. Your first spin.

Do you remember how clunky you felt the first time you touched a pole? Remember how uncoordinated you felt? Your first spin is when all that begins to change.

6. Your first climb.

If you aren’t jumping onto the pole, then you know how much strength it takes to lift yourself smoothly onto the pole for climbing. Huge milestone.

7. Your first invert.

If climbing requires strength, then inverting requires super powers. Lifting your body gently into an invert (no kicking up allowed!) is an awesome feat. When you finally achieve it, beam with pride – you’ve earned it!

8. The first time you get into and out of an invert gracefully.

As if inverting weren’t hard enough, now you have to work it into the rest of your dancing. Doing it gracefully is a pole dancing triumph.

9. Your first outdoor poling.

I don’t know what it is about pole dancing, but you reach a point where any pole you see is one you want to dance on. Whether that means inverting at your kid’s school playground, doing the Superman at the local park, or climbing up a street sign, it’s an exhibitionist rush that tells the world we pole dancers are not to be denied.

10. Your first pole dance performance.

Maybe it’s a private show for your sweetie, maybe it’s a recital at your pole class, or maybe it’s a full-on pole dance competition – no matter, because the first time you perform in public is always an occasion worth celebrating!

What have been your favorite pole dancing firsts?

@Adara – Ooh, that’s a good one! When can we see some pics? :)

  3. Adara says:

how about your first pole photoshoot? Just had mine – so much fun! Especially since one of my instructors was the photographer.

  4. How about: teaching your first class?? ;)

  5. PoleSkivvies says:

@Meaganoff – yes, that is absolutely another first! Hope you get your pole back up soon!

    @Lori – #8, I’m so not there yet, either!

    1. My very, very, very first pole class was at S Factor in San Francisco with a friend. However, I consider my first pole class the taster class I took at Twirly Girls in Pleasanton with Rita a couple of years later. That’s what started my actual love affair with pole. :-) That was a year and a half ago.

    2. I got my first pole for home less than a year later. I miss my old house when I actually had a room only for pole!

    3. Still on my first pole. :-)

    4. No pole mat yet. :-/

    5. Oh yes…I still remember how uncoordinated I felt. And sometimes still feel that way!!

    6. I do remember my first climb. I am still pretty basic in my climbs but I have a photo of me doing my first climb!

    7. My first invert was very recent!!! And, again, I have a photo!!! I was four months ahead of schedule on it so I was and still am very excited!!

    8. Yeah…um…not there yet.

    9. I don’t have any moves cool enough for outdoor pole. lol!

    10. My first real performance was for the Lovely Rita fundraiser last April! I performed for my own “new-birthday” in March, though, to practice. Helped me work out the kinks. The second annual fundraiser and dance recital is this April! I have TWO performances this time. I’m excited!!

  7. Meaganoff says:

My first pole-iversary is coming up in 9 days! Happy about that one! Of course, my pole has been down for almost a month due to crazy personal circumstances. Boo…

Maybe that’s another first: the first time you realize poling clashes with other things in your life! :P But you work through it. Getting back on track this week!!
