Claire Sterrett’s Pole Story Book

Claire Sterrett
Claire Sterrett of the Pole Story has written a book on pole!

So you wrote a book about pole dancing called Pole Story? Tell us about it!

Yes! It’s basically a collection of essays that I wrote about how and why pole dancing is emotionally and psychologically beneficial for women. It focuses a lot on the sensuality of the movement and how it has the potential to be very healing for women. It also has some very beautiful pictures by George Grigorian. It’s a fun, sexy, smart book!

Why did you decide to write this book?

Well, I have a blog called The Pole Story that I started writing after I completed my thesis for my MA in psychology. My thesis was on how pole dancing can be therapeutically beneficial for women. The blog is basically a continuation of everything that I discovered in my research. It’s also a journal of my pole dancing experiences.

As I became more and more involved in the pole dancing world, I realized that our community had very little in the way of literature. And I wanted to change that. One of the reasons erotic dance has never been taken seriously as an art is because no one has ever written about it – its history, its value. I also very much believe in the sensual side of pole dancing, and I wanted to shed light on why it (sensuality) is actually a deeply important part of the dance.

What do you hope to bring to your readers?

To tell you the truth, I wrote the book with non-pole dancers in mind. I know that pole dancers will get it. And I hope that what I bring to them is the satisfaction of seeing their reasons for dancing put into beautiful words that make sense to them. It’s not always easy to defend the sensuality of the movement to others and to explain why it is important and how pole dancing is different from stripping, etc.

But I also wanted to be able to reach an audience who had perhaps never set foot in a pole dance studio. And for them, I hope to bring a different perspective on the art of pole dancing as well as encourage them to keep an open mind when it comes to expressions of female sensuality. This is very much a book you could give to your parents.

And where can we find this beautiful book on pole dancing?

You can find it on my website Pole Story, as well as Amazon, and it will be available shortly at Bad Kitty Exotic Wear! It is also for sale at Skylight Books in Los Angeles. And I’m offering it at wholesale cost to any studios or websites that are interested in retailing it.

How did you get started pole dancing?

I was working at a Wellness Center as a massage therapist and the woman who ran the center brought in a pole dance instructor name Tara Moore to teach us a class. I was totally resistant to the idea, but we were required to go so … I went! I fell in love with the movement instantly. I took classes with her for a year and then went on to dance at S factor.

How would you describe your personal style?

Ummmm. Very, very sensual. Maybe even erotic. Definitely erotic.

What is your biggest struggle as a pole dancer?

Honestly, it’s confidence on the pole. I have mental blocks around certain tricks, and so it takes me a while to really get comfortable with a new trick.

Anything else you’d like to share:

You can look inside the book on Amazon.com if you want a sneak peek!

And of course, I am very grateful to PoleSkivvies for this opportunity to talk about my book! And I love the pole dance community with all my heart.
